TAVERNIER MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN STATE PRISON AFTER VIOLATING PROBATION IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE

A Tavernier man who violently dragged his girlfriend more than 1,300 feet down the roadway with his truck in 2021 has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison after violating his probation just days after release.
Scott David Alan Hedger was originally adjudicated guilty on September 10, 2024, after pleading no contest under a negotiated plea agreement before County Judge Sharon Hamilton. He was sentenced to 42 months in state prison, followed by eight years of probation, and ordered to pay $125,000 in restitution and court costs, with a strict no-contact order with the victim. Hedger was given credit for 1,073 days served in county jail custody — nearly 35 months.
The original case stemmed from a September 14, 2021 domestic-violence incident in Tavernier, when Hedger used his white Chevrolet Silverado to drag his girlfriend approximately 1,300 feet down the roadway, causing catastrophic injuries that required her to be airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital. Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) followed a continuous blood trail and scattered belongings stretching from 262 Lincoln Avenue to Broadway and Coconut Row, documenting the full path of the assault. After dragging her, Hedger left the victim on the side of the road, failing to call 911 or render aid, and instead phoned his brother to tell him “there was stuff going on.”
Despite being given a clear opportunity to comply with court-ordered supervision, Hedger violated his probation within days of release by calling and attempting to contact the victim at least 29 times, in direct defiance of the no-contact order. The Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) Probation Office immediately notified the State Attorney’s Office (SAO), and with the assistance of SAO Investigator Roy Bogue, a warrant was swiftly issued and Hedger was taken into custody.
On September 26, 2025, Circuit Judge James Morgan adjudicated Hedger guilty of violating probation and sentenced him to 10 years in state prison, followed by four years of probation. He remains responsible for $110,000 in restitution, as well as fines and court costs.
“This case is another example of our commitment to seeking justice for victims of domestic violence,” said State Attorney Dennis Ward. “Dragging another human being for more than 1,300 feet across the pavement shows a complete disregard for life itself. And to turn around and harass the same victim again is beyond comprehension. In Monroe County, we will not tolerate this kind of cruelty or defiance of the court’s orders.”
Chief Assistant State Attorney Joseph Mansfield added, “This was not an accident — it was a violent and deliberate act, followed by a willful attempt to re-victimize. The evidence, the trail, and the aftermath made clear the brutality of what occurred. When someone shows that level of disregard for both their victim and the law, prison is not only appropriate — it’s necessary. We will continue to pursue maximum accountability for offenders who endanger others.”
The original case was investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the recent probation-violation case was handled by the Florida Department of Corrections Probation Office with assistance from State Attorney’s Office Investigator Roy Bogue. Both prosecutions were handled by Assistant State Attorney Trey Evans.
