REMINDER: Last Minute Key Deer Protests Planned for College of the Florida Keys Campuses Today
Save our Key deer is hosting the protests from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. on the Key West and Key Largo campuses and asks that participants carpool if possible.
The Big Pine conservation group Save Our Key Deer is holding two last minute protests today from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at College of the Florida Keys campuses in Key West and Key Largo.
Organizers are calling the event a self-directed, non-violent, peaceful protest and asks that participants abide by all applicable laws and lawful orders of authorities.
They also ask that participants carpool to the respective sites to minimize the carbon footprint of the activities.
College of the Florida Keys Board Rejects Humane Gate for Trapped Key Deer, Fires President
BIG PINE KEY — The College of the Florida Keys Board of Trustees rejected a proposal to immediately install a humane wildlife gate at a college-leased property where a small herd of endangered Key deer — including a nursing fawn — has been trapped since at least mid-March, sparking community outrage and raising questions about potential federal Endangered Species Act violations.
The College of the Florida Keys, has steadfastly refused efforts by the group to install humane wildlife gate and cameras to allow a herd of Key deer the has been trapped for more than four months at the former site of the Big Pine Key road prison on Key Deer Blvd., which the College intends to use as a location for a commercial truck driving school.
