Phone Scam Impersonating Apple Security Targets Florida Keys Residents
Sheriff’s Office warns of texts claiming fraudulent Apple Pay charges.
KEY WEST, Fla. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone and text message scam in which thieves impersonate Apple security representatives and attempt to trick victims into sending money.
Authorities said the scam involves messages claiming the recipient, or someone using their Apple ID or Apple Pay account, made a $572.62 purchase on a pornography website. The message provides a phone number and urges the recipient to call to resolve the alleged charge.
One person who reported the incident to deputies said they had not visited the site and do not use Apple Pay. Investigators noted the message originated from a suspicious email address — zhoulanshang999@icloud.com — rather than an official company source.
Officials said the tactic is consistent with common fraud schemes designed to create urgency and prompt victims to share personal or financial information.
The Sheriff’s Office urged residents to avoid engaging with unsolicited messages about account problems and instead contact companies directly using verified phone numbers or websites.
Authorities also cautioned that scammers frequently pose as law enforcement officers or government officials, sometimes claiming missed jury duty or other legal issues, in an effort to extort money.
A key warning sign of fraud, officials said, is any request for payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin.
Residents who receive suspicious messages are encouraged to save any relevant information, including texts or emails, and report the incident directly to the Sheriff’s Office or call 305-289-2351.
