Monroe County to Host Free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training
Florida Keys residents can learn how to identify and report severe weather during a free National Weather Service certification class Aug. 15 in Marathon.
MARATHON, Fla. — Monroe County Emergency Management is inviting Florida Keys residents to become certified National Weather Service SKYWARN storm spotters during a free training session on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Marathon branch of the Monroe County Public Library. National Weather Service Key West meteorologist Jon Rizzo will lead the certification course.
Participants will learn the basics of thunderstorm development, storm structure, how to recognize severe weather features, proper reporting procedures and severe weather safety.
Trained SKYWARN volunteers provide real-time weather observations that help the National Weather Service issue more accurate and timely warnings during severe weather events.
