Monroe County Sheriff’s Sergeant Arrested On Official Misconduct Charges
Investigators say longtime SRO falsified timesheets, claimed full days from home
KEY WEST, Fla. — A longtime Monroe County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was arrested March 26 on multiple felony charges after investigators said he falsified work timesheets by claiming full workdays he did not perform.
Sgt. Eric Mixon, 53, was charged with seven counts of official misconduct following an internal investigation that found he reported working full shifts on numerous days when he never left his home, according to the sheriff’s office.
Mixon, who served as a School Resource Officer sergeant, retired earlier this month after being interviewed as part of the investigation.
Authorities said a comprehensive review of Mixon’s work-related activity, equipment usage and other evidence supported the allegations. At question will be whether or not he was approved to work from home, which would be unusual according to sources close to the investigation.
“I take officer integrity and fiscal responsibility very seriously and I am committed to being transparent when both positive and negative examples arise,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay in a statement.
Official misconduct is a third-degree felony in Florida, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine per count.
Mixon was hired by the sheriff’s office on Jan. 18, 1995.
Additional details about the case, including court proceedings and potential restitution, were not immediately available. Teh docket surrounding his case is still listed as confidential on the Monroe County Clerk’s website.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
