Meeting to Discuss Simonton Parking Garage Set for Tuesday
I was preparing to work on an advance about the proposed large parking garage planned next to the fire station on Simonton and Angela streets in Oldtown.
However, Chris Hamilton of Friends of Car Street Key West has already published not one, but two in-depth examinations of the issue, and rather than duplicate that work, it makes sense to share his reporting.
In his first piece, Hamilton breaks down the proposed Simonton Street facility and outlines what would be required in the surrounding area should the city move forward with the garage in order to make the neighborhood more attractive and functional. The project is being vociferously opposed by members of the Gardens Condominium Association and other Old Town residents.

In his second piece, Hamilton examines a separate proposed alternative: the Stock Island Intermodal Center. That concept would combine affordable housing for transit department employees with potential mixed-use retail, community space, and up to 255 parking spaces, which proponents say could help alleviate congestion in the Historic Old Town area along Simonton Street.
Both pieces offer a strong, well-reasoned breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of the competing proposals and are well worth reading.
City officials are scheduled to begin a public workshop on the issue at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at City Hall, 1300 White St. up to 255 parking spaces which would alleviate congestion in the Historic Old Town area along Simonton.
Check them out. Strong work and a good breakdown on the advantages and disadvantages of the plan.
