The deadline to remove Key West’s Pride crosswalks at the intersection of Duval and Petronia streets has been extended until the Florida Department of Transportation hears final arguments from both sides on Friday.

But if you ever wanted to see the living, walking embodiment of spineless, stuttering idiots, you needed to attend or watch the Key West City Commission meeting on Wednesday night.

All of this stems from a MAGA-led anti-woke campaign against LGBTQ+ communities across the state eminating from Washington and Tallahassee.

Roughly 100 citizens showed up to voice their concerns and wishes that the city stand up to Tallahassee and its draconian attack on home rule

Governor Ron DeSantis is so fervently attempting to raise his profile within the MAGA crowd that he is taking on any symbols of opposing ideology.

Not only LGBTQ+ crosswalks, but also street art recognizing the sacrifices of veterans, first responders, and more.

The dais was met with rousing oratory from the public — only to fall on deaf (and remarkably dumb) ears.

The Conch Connection — handpicked by the most powerful attorneys, real estate agents, and developers on the island — voted to take no action to retain the crosswalks pending the State’s final ruling.

From clockwise: Mayor Henriquez, Commissioners Castillo, Carey and Lee voted to cede Key West’s Pride sidewalks to the FDOT in a strong message to the LGBTQ+ community in the Island City. / CONTRIBUTED

Commissioners Lissette Carey, Donie Lee, Aaron Castillo, and Mayor Danise Henriquez were concerned that taking any action against the State or FDOT could result in denials of future funding for Key West projects.
