Mayor Danise Henriquez and challenger Sam Kaufman outlined competing visions for growth, housing and city leadership during a forum hosted by Hometown Key West.
A few of Mayor Henriquez's statements deserve some additional context.
She said that one of her priorities has been "returning Higgs Beach to the city where it belongs." However, Higgs Beach was never previously owned by the City.
She also pointed to stormwater funding and other community project funding as accomplishments of her administration. While those funds may have been awarded during her time as mayor, many of the projects themselves were planned and pursued years before she took office. They were the result of work by previous commissions, mayors, city staff, engineers, and community advocates.
There is a difference between starting a project and being in office when the funding arrives.
Voters should know which projects were created and advanced by the current administration and which were already in the pipeline. That's not to diminish the work of the current mayor, but it is important to give credit where credit is due and provide voters with a complete picture.
As the campaign moves forward, it would be helpful for all candidates to clearly identify what they personally initiated, what they inherited, and what results they can directly claim as their own.
