KEY WEST, Fla. — Key West and Monroe County have several options for establishing reliable local funding for public transportation as officials prepare for final budget hearings, said Chris Hamilton, founder of Friends of Car-Free Key West.
Hamilton’s latest Streets for People column examines how dedicated parking revenue, cruise-ship disembarkation fees and tourist-development taxes could help restore service to Stock Island, increase Lower Keys Shuttle frequency and eventually revive the Duval Loop.
He also calls for the city and county to commission an independent study identifying legally viable, recurring funding sources for a transit system that now depends heavily on uncertain state and federal grants.
