Fake ‘Movie Money’ Circulating in Lower Keys and Key West, Sheriff Warns
Monroe County deputies are warning residents and businesses to watch for counterfeit $100 bills marked “For Motion Picture Use Only.”
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning Lower Keys residents and businesses to be on alert after reports of fake or counterfeit currency — designed for use in movies — began circulating throughout the Keys.
Deputies say several incidents have involved $100 bills clearly labeled “For Motion Picture Use Only.” Though the bills carry small print identifying them as fake, authorities caution that they can appear genuine at a casual glance, particularly in low light or during quick transactions.
“These bills are not legal tender, and using or attempting to use them is a crime,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Monday afternoon. “We’re asking everyone — especially local businesses, bartenders, and cashiers — to take a second look before accepting large bills.”
The Sheriff’s Office released sample photos of the counterfeit notes and advised residents to report any suspicious currency immediately.
The Key West Police Department recently issued a similar alert regarding fake $20 bills, suggesting the counterfeit money may be part of a broader trend spreading through the Lower Keys.
Authorities urge anyone who receives one of the fake bills to note where it came from, avoid passing it along, and contact local law enforcement.
“Please help us spread the word,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “A quick double-check could prevent a costly mistake.”
