BREAKING: Russell Withdraws From District V Key West Commission Race
Monroe County School District HR chief exits 2026 race, potentially clearing path for newly appointed interim Commissioner Greg Veliz to seek the regular seat.
Harry Russell, one of two candidates for the Key West City Commission’s District V seat announced Tuesday afternoon on social media that he is withdrawing from the race, citing professional obligations and the demands of his role with the Monroe County School District.
In a written statement, the candidate said the decision came “after much reflection,” calling it difficult but necessary for him, his family and the community.
“The children and families of the Monroe County School District remain at the center of my heart and my work,” Russell said. “Serving them as Executive Director of HR is a responsibility I take seriously, and the demands of that role deserve my full attention. At this time, I simply do not have the capacity to run the kind of campaign our community deserves.”
While his withdrawal marks a personal decision, it also reshapes the political landscape. The move potentially clears the way for newly appointed interim Commissioner Greg Veliz — the FKAA executive director sworn in Tuesday to fill the remainder of the late Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover’s term — to seek the permanent seat in 2026. Veliz has not publicly said whether he intends to run.
The departing candidate thanked supporters who had encouraged him early in the bid and emphasized that his commitment to Key West will continue from outside elected office.
“Key West is a special place, and I remain committed to serving our community, just from a different seat,” he said. “Thank you for understanding, and thank you for all you do to make our island home stronger, kinder and more resilient.”
