BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Greene Street shooting victim in critical condition at Miami hospital
The Monroe County State Attorney’s Office reported conflicting information; KWPD Chief confirms victim in critical condition


KEY WEST — One victim of the early Sunday morning shooting outside Tattoos & Scars Saloon at 512 Greene Street was in critical condition according KWPD public information officer Alyson Crean.
“The chief just called the hospital in Miami and confirmed the victim was in critical condition as of Monday evening,” said Crean at around 8 p.m.

The Key West Police Department responded to a fight on the 500 block of Greene Street in the vicinity of Tattoos & Scars Saloon. At about 3:55 a.m., While taking the 911 call, dispatchers heard what sounded like multiple gunshots, later confirmed by the caller.
Officers arrived on scene within minutes and were directed to the alleged shooter by witnesses. A firearm was located, and a 25-year-old local male, Alijah Alihikaua Helmar, was taken into custody and charged.
Helmar is being held at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island and faces three felony counts for attempted homicide and aggregated battery. He also faces misdemeanor counts for battery, firing a weapon and disorderly conduct.
First responders located a 25-year-old local male with multiple gunshot wounds along with a 33-year-old local male with a single gunshot wound and immediately began rendering aid until Key West Fire Department personnel arrived on scene.
Witnesses said the downtown area, just off Duval near Sloppy Joe’s, Rick’s and Captain Tony’s was particularly busy in the early morning hours because of the Key West Song Writer’s Festival.
