BREAKING: Key West Commission Approves $75,000 Holiday Food Assistance Program
Commissioners move quickly to create emergency funding path for local food pantries, offering up to $7,500 per nonprofit through a first-come, first-served application process due Dec. 31.
In a swift but substantive move ahead of the holidays, the Key West City Commission on Wednesday adopted a resolution providing $75,000 in emergency funding to local food pantries and nonprofits serving food-insecure residents.
The unanimous vote came eight days after a failed effort to approve similar funding during the regular commission meeting, a contentious debate that sparked community backlash over what many constituents described as tone-deaf comments from several commissioners who opposed Commissioner Sam Kaufman’s original proposal.
After roughly 45 minutes of debate Monday, commissioners blended elements of two competing resolutions into a single measure. The final plan allocates city funds to eligible nonprofits in increments of up to $7,500 per organization, intended to bolster strained food-distribution efforts during the end-of-year demand surge.
The vote was unanimous, with Commissioners Aaron Castillo, Monica Haskell, Donie Lee, Sam Kaufman and Mayor Danise Henriquez voting yes. Commissioners Lissette Carey and Greg Veliz were unable to attend the meeting.
Carey had a statement read into the record asking the members of the dais to vote down both measures.
City Manager Brian Barroso said applications could be available “as early as tonight,” adding that the city intends to move quickly to get money into the hands of organizations already experiencing heightened need.
Under the amended resolution, nonprofits must complete a three-page application and submit it to the City Clerk’s Office — in person, by U.S. mail, or via email. Awards will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with a firm submission deadline of Dec. 31.
Commissioners emphasized that the accelerated timeline is designed to ensure local families receive support during the height of the holiday season, when food insecurity typically peaks.
The meeting adjourned with staff directed to publish the application and begin accepting submissions immediately.
