BREAKING: Key West City Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover Passes Away
Key West is mourning the loss of District V Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover, a veteran public-health advocate and longtime civic leader whose work shaped the island’s social services, women’s health.
Key West City Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover, a cornerstone of the island’s civic and nonprofit community and a leading voice for maternal health and suicide-prevention initiatives, has died, city officials confirmed Thursday morning.
Hoover, 72, had been battling significant health issues in recent months. She missed a series of City Commission meetings this fall and had recently announced she would not seek reelection due to her health.
In 2007, she was elected Fantasy Fest Queen, along with King Chris Lippa.
Her work was widely recognized for strengthening collaboration among health providers, social service agencies and community nonprofits.
She was also a prominent advocate for suicide-prevention awareness, a role she took on publicly after the loss of her son. Her efforts helped bring additional support training and mental-health resources to Key West families and frontline workers.
During her seven years on the dais representing District V, Hoover pushed for affordable housing initiatives, stronger protections for seniors, expanded city–nonprofit partnerships, and improvements to community parks and recreation programs. Colleagues frequently described her as methodical, compassionate, and deeply committed to the well-being of Key West’s most vulnerable residents.
This is an evolving story. Above the Fold will update as more information becomes available.
