BREAKING: Check Before You Fly: Key West Airport Passengers Urged to Confirm Flights Amid FAA Cuts
With hundreds of flights canceled nationwide, Key West International remains unaffected — but travelers are urged to confirm departures at www.eyw.com before heading to the airport.
If you’re flying out of Key West International Airport, you might want to double-check your flight status at www.eyw.com.
While the Federal Aviation Administration’s nationwide flight reductions have canceled hundreds of departures across the country, the southernmost city’s airport remains unaffected — at least for now.
The FAA announced this week it will reduce flight schedules by 10 percent at 40 “high-volume” airports beginning Friday to ease strain on air traffic controllers who have been working unpaid since October 1.
The cuts, linked to the ongoing government shutdown, are expected to affect thousands of flights nationwide.
According to FlightAware.com, more than 800 flights were canceled as of Friday morning, but the popular flight-tracking website showed no disruptions for Key West International Airport.
Key West International — despite being one of the smallest commercial airports in the country — now boasts service from eight major and low-cost carriers: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Allegiant Air, Breeze Airways, Spirit Airlines, and Avelo Airlines (service beginning Nov. 19.)
Together, they provide nonstop connections to nearly 15 U.S. cities, including Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Orlando, Nashville, St. Petersburg, New York, and Boston.
American remains the dominant carrier at EYW, operating multiple daily flights to Miami and Charlotte — key gateways to domestic and international connections. Delta and United run routes to Atlanta, Newark, and Houston, while newer entrants like Breeze, Spirit, and Avelo have added affordable leisure routes linking the Keys with Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and smaller East Coast cities.
More than 1.4 million passengers pass through Key West International each year — a figure that has grown sharply since the airport’s 2023 terminal expansion and runway improvements. Still, officials warn that delays at larger connecting airports such as Miami, Atlanta, and Charlotte could affect Keys-bound travelers as the FAA’s capacity cuts ripple outward.
AAA travel analyst Aixa Diaz urged passengers to check their flight apps and airport updates early and often — especially if you have connections through the FAA’s major markets.
Key West International also advises arriving at least two hours early for departures, allowing for delays in TSA checkpoints.
