KEY WEST, Fla. — Charges against Key West Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ralph Major were dropped Friday afternoon after State Attorney Dennis Ward met with him personally and reviewed the case.
Ward confirmed to Above the Fold that the charge had been dropped but declined further comment. Earlier in the week, Ward said he planned to take a personal look at the case and speak with several more people involved before deciding whether to move forward with prosecution.
Major had been charged with misuse of 911 after taking control of a city-owned work truck assigned to an employee who had left it running with the keys in the ignition at Higgs Beach. Major never called 911; the employee reported the vehicle stolen after discovering it missing.

KEY WEST, Fla. — A longtime City of Key West parks superintendent is accused of misusing the 911 system after police say he took a city work vehicle assigned to one of his departments employees while off duty “to prove a point,” prompting the employee to report the vehicle stolen and triggering a police search.
Major surrendered Monday after an arrest warrant was issued and was released on $15,000 bond.
The City of Key West’s Human Resources Department cleared Major earlier in the week, and he returned to work Thursday.
Mayor Takes Time to Meet with Major
Key West Mayor Sam Kaufman took time out of his day to meet with Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ralph Major and offer his personal support to the popular city employee, president of the Key West Junior Football League and popular dog behaviorist.
Mayor Sam Kaufman met with Major at City Hall Friday morning and publicly offered his support, saying Major’s years of service to the city and community were valued by all.
