Avelo Airlines Begins Key West Flights Nov. 19 Amid Controversy and Cash Troubles
Avelo Airlines begins Key West flights Nov. 19 — but the low-cost carrier’s debut comes amid backlash over ICE deportation contracts and mounting debt.
Low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines will begin service to Key West International Airport on November 19, but the company’s expansion comes under a darkening cloud of controversy and financial strain that has industry observers questioning whether it can stay airborne.
Budget Carrier, Big Baggage
Avelo will offer twice-weekly flights between Key West and Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut, positioning the new route as part of its effort to “connect underserved leisure destinations.” Introductory one-way fares start around $77.
But while Key West officials are welcoming the additional airlift, critics say the airline’s reputation — and its balance sheet — are both running on fumes.
The five-year-old airline, founded by former Allegiant executive Andrew Levy, has been beleaguered by debt, high maintenance costs, and poor investor confidence following a series of canceled West Coast routes and layoffs earlier this year. Aviation analysts say Avelo’s aggressive expansion on the East Coast, including the new Key West run, is a last-ditch bid to restore cash flow.
“They’re flying on borrowed time,” said one former airline industry executive familiar with the company’s finances. “The burn rate is unsustainable, and the ICE contract bought them time — not solvency.”
Deportation Flight Backlash
That contract — a multimillion-dollar charter deal with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to fly ICE deportees to Central and South America — has sparked protests at several airports and prompted some local governments to boycott the carrier.
Under the deal, Avelo reportedly dedicates three Boeing 737-800 aircraft to “ICE Air” deportation operations from Mesa, Arizona, and other hubs. Immigrant-rights activists have staged demonstrations outside airports in Connecticut, Albany, and Denver, accusing the airline of “profiting off human misery.”
Avelo has defended the contract as “a necessary commercial decision” that provides “critical federal airlift services and job stability for flight crews,” but the backlash has compounded concerns about the airline’s long-term brand value.
Key West, County Officials Quiet
The Monroe County Airport Authority has not commented on the controversy surrounding Avelo’s government work or its financial condition. Local tourism advocates say they hope the route succeeds, though some acknowledge it carries reputational risks.
They have a large airport expansion that many question that needs to be paid for. Ironically, most of the funding for it came from the Biden administration, but the overly Republican county commission and director of airports saw no reason to send the checks back.
“We want affordable access to the island,” said one local hotelier who asked not to be named, “but no one wants to see another Silver Airways scenario — big promises, short runway.”
A Troubled Industry Parallel
Avelo’s struggles echo those of Silver Airways, another Florida-based regional carrier that promised to expand connectivity in the Keys and Caribbean but collapsed under debt and mechanical issues in 2024, leaving passengers stranded and staff unpaid.
Both airlines chased low-yield leisure markets while operating aging fleets and relying on venture capital to survive.

The Bottom Line
Avelo’s Key West service is scheduled to debut with fanfare and tropical photo ops, but beneath the marketing lies a company facing the dual turbulence of financial instability and public backlash over its government deportation flights.
If the airline fails to stabilize its operations, Key West’s newest connection could prove as fleeting as the contrails it leaves over the Straits of Florida.
